OMG! … GPS took me up a dirt road … now what?!

OMG! … I am in an unknown rural mountain area; my GPS has looped me in circles … and now I am at a dead-end dirt road!

Many times, when you are traveling in a different and new place, you aren’t too worried because you have GPS. Miles later, you are losing signal in “dead zones” blocked by mountains, and you find yourself driving in circles!

I have had this happen (a few times!) and I want to give you some GPS alternatives:

  • Maps: Physical maps or map apps that work offline can be reliable alternatives to GPS.
  • Google: (and other search engine) research before your trip!
  • AAA: (I remember being a kid and they gave you “Trip Ticks”!)
  • Compass: Useful for navigating directionally, especially in remote areas without reliable GPS signals. (Remember … the sun rises in the East and sets in the West!)
  • Road Signs: Pay attention to road signs and landmarks for navigation.
  • Printed directions: Plan your route in advance and print out directions or write them down. (This saved me when my phone battery died, and GPS was a memory!)
  • Local knowledge: Ask locals for directions or recommendations along the way.
  • Navigation apps with offline maps: Some navigation apps allow you to download maps for offline use, such as MAPS.ME or Here WeGo.
  • Travel guidebooks: Guidebooks often include maps and detailed directions for popular routes.
  • GPS devices: Standalone GPS devices can still be dependable, especially in areas with poor cellular coverage.
  • Celestial navigation: Advanced navigators can use celestial objects like the sun or stars to determine direction. (Once again … the sun rises in the East and sets in the West!)
  • Landmarks and natural features: Use prominent landmarks or natural features to orient yourself and navigate.
